People doing research need to keep detailed notes. Research is about facts and the relationships among data. A clear line of reasoning needs to be documented in order to prove or disprove a theory.

In addition, the literature needs to be reviewed to determine results past research has produced. This research can then be referenced and sited as a basis for new efforts.
